Information about CZECH REPUBLIC Situated at the heart of Europe, the Czech Republic has seen more change, both peaceful and otherwise, than almost any other country on the continent. The country is now famous for its Velvet Revolution of 1989, when the country passed quietly from Communist to democratic rule. The capital Prague is one of Europe’s most beautiful and, in comparison with some, one of it’s cheapest. Despite regularly being the scene of many historic military clashes, the country is still extremely picturesque. It boasts no less than eleven UNESCO World Heritage sites and over 2000 castles and chateaux and is famed for its spa towns and resorts. Its architecture is matched by its scenery. Wherever you go you will find beautiful forest covered hills and mountains and numerous lakes. The Czech Republic has made great strides since gaining independence and its transition into a European state has been exemplary, resulting in NATO membership in 2002 and full EU membership in 2004. Its economy is stable and they have established good foreign trade relations with the rest of Europe.
